So you want a Siberian Husky? I know, you seen
the movie 'Snow Dogs' and would just love to have one, right? Well before making that decission I would like to give you some
basic information on Siberian Huskies.
Please do as much research as possible on this breed before buying or adopting
one. Many Siberian Huskies end up in shelters because people did not research this wonderful breed of dog and did
not know what they were in for.
Siberian Huskies are very high maintance dogs. They don't shed, they 'Blow Coat'!!!
We are talking weeks of hair, hair, hair, and still more hair. I always read that they do this twice a year. Well, mine never
read this because they 'BLOW' 4 times a year!!! They have 2 coats, guard hairs and undercoat this keeps them insulated year
round. They can withstand temps down to -70 below zero in the winter. This same insulation helps keep them cool in the summer.
Please do not shave them!!! They really don't need bathed but they do need brushed often.
Siberian Huskies need
lots of exercise. If you enjoy the outdoors, hiking, biking, jogging then a husky may be the dog for you. Also don't forget
all the winter activies, they are a year round companion.
Siberian Huskies are very mischievous. If you have a child or
know one with ADD, you get the idea of what I mean by mischievous.
They are very intelligent, maybe to much so for their
own good. What do I mean by this? Well, they are trainable but have a mind of their own. If there is something in it for them
they will do it.Siberian Huskies typically do not bark. However they do "talk" in a woo wooing tone. They also are
howlers. The more you argue with them the more they will back talk you!!!
The Siberian Husky makes a wonderful companion
with the proper training. That training takes patience and consistency, you must reinforce this everyday. They are loving,
playful, and very clever. They have cat like traits, such as using their paws to bat stuff around and play with things. Some
even become very good at learning to open doors!!!
Siberian Huskies are very friendly so they DO NOT make good watchdogs.
They may be leary of strangers and howl but they would let them walk off with everything you own. Given the chance they would
even go with them.
A Siberian Husky cannot be trusted off-leash and so should never be. They are a sled dog, bred to
pull and run up to 100 miles a day. So given the chance to run they will do so. Which leads to many of them being hit and
killed or injuried very badly. Running after them to catch them becomes a game to them so they will keep running from you.
This is why 'come' 'sit' and 'stay' are such important commands to teach and reinforce often.
They are expert escape
artist. A slightly opened door or gate is their ticket out. They need very secure and high fencing. Don't laugh some people
have their yards secured like Fort Knox and with good reason! The ones that don't jump or climb the fence will dug out from
under it. Most huskies can clear a 6 foot fence with no problem.
Siberian Huskies are pack animals, like wolves. So
they need to be part of your family, YOU ARE THEIR PACK. Not everyone has more than one but it is a good idea or at
least another dog companion. They also need to know that the human family is above them in pack order or you could have problems.
They are never alpha over the human family. If you do have other dogs they will work out their pack order which can get scary
at times.
Siberian Huskies become bored very easily. A bored husky is a destructive husky. A tired husky is a good
husky. They love to dig!!! If you like a pretty, well landscaped yard and garden, choose another breed of dog.
